Our Cabinet Painting Process

- Before We Arrive
Before we start our process, we ask our customers to remove all items from drawers being painted, and to either remove cabinet contents or move them back at least three inches from the front. You should also clear countertops and any items on top of cabinets.
- Protect the Area
That’s all you need to do before we arrive. We’ll then begin the process by sealing off the area to prevent paint going where it shouldn’t. We’ll also create a completely protected spray area either in the garage or outside for prep and painting the doors and drawers. We thoroughly cover and protect all surrounding surfaces not being painted, e.g., the countertops, walls, flooring, and appliances.
- Remove Hardware
Our preparation and painting process includes both sides of doors, all face frames, drawer fronts, and all exposed bottoms and sides of cabinets. We remove all hardware from doors and drawers. If it will be reused on the newly painted cabinets, we will label it for accurate reinstallation afterward.
- Prep the Surface
Preparation is very important in all painting endeavors; however, it is especially critical when painting cabinets. That’s because cabinets can be composed of different materials. Each type requires a specific prep process to ensure proper adhesion and lasting quality.
All surfaces to be painted are sanded, wiped free of dust and remaining contaminants, and then primed using a bonding primer before sanding again. Next, we caulk all cracks, gaps, and seams in cabinets and cabinet trim, filling nail holes using putty.
- Paint
Only after all the proper preparations have been completed and surfaces are ready, do we paint them using premium quality Sherwin Williams brand Emerald urethane enamel in the color and sheen of your choice. This product is made specifically for painting cabinets. It resists yellowing and withstands many washings without fading or chipping.
- Reinstall Doors and Drawers
When the paint is completely dry, we will re-mount the cabinet doors and replace drawers. We will either replace the hardware that was removed before painting, or install new hardware, depending on your preference.
- Clean Up
As with any paint job, we don’t consider it complete until the space is restored to its original condition. That means removing all tarps and covers and cleaning up any debris or mess we created. When we leave, the only thing different will be the beautiful, newly-painting cabinets.
